Thomas Lehmen ist freiberuflicher Choreograph, Tänzer und Lehrer. Von 1986 bis 1990 studierte er an der School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam. Von 1990 bis Juli 2010 lebte er in Berlin. Hier entwickelte er zahlreiche Soli, Gruppenstücke und Projekte: u.a. "distanzlos, "mono subjects, "Schreibstück", "It’s better to...", "Lehmen lernt", die weltweit aufgeführt werden. 2010 und 2011 hielt er eine Professur an der Arizona State University inne. Anschließend produzierte u.a. die Arbeiten "Schrottplatz" und "Bitte...". Ab 2013 tourt er mit dem aktuellen Projekt "A Piece for You" durch die Welt. Seit 2017 arbeitet er wiederum in Oberhausen mit dem Projekt "Brauchse Jobb? Wir machen Kunst!". 2019 öffnet das Kunsthaus Mitte in Oberhausen.
Die Publikationen "Schreibstück" (Buch und Partitur für jeweils 3 Gruppen in Kanonform) und "Funktionen-Toolbox" (auf emergente Ergebnisse abzielende kommunikative Choreographien) erregten anhaltende internationale Aufmerksamkeit und riefen zahlreiche Variationen hervor.
Neben der Professur in Arizona hielt er Gast Professuren in mehreren Universitäten und unterrrichtet Workshops in diversen Formaten.
Zu den wiederkehrenden Interessen gehören die Entwicklung künstlerischer Formate und Strukturen, Kommunikationen und das menschliche Wesen, das sich in seiner Umwelt reflektiert und diese durch kreative Beziehungen gestaltet. Die Herangehensweisen zeigen konzeptionelle Methoden und Darstellungsformen auf, die oft sprachliche Elemente beinhalten. Stilistisch sind die intellektuelle Ebene und insistierende Konsequenz mit Zugänglichkeit und Humor gepaart. In der physikalisch tänzerischen Komponente arbeitet er u.a. mit individuellen Artikulationen, Relationen der Tänzer und tänzerischen Dialogen. Seine eigene Tanztechnik baut auf europäische, nord amerikanische und asiatische Prinzipien auf.

Next to the professorship in Arizona, he was guest professor in numerous universities and gives workshops internationally in diverse formats.
His returning interests are the development of artistic formats and structures, communications and the human being which reflects itself in the environment and actively influences that with creative relations. The approaches often show elements of language through conceptional methods and expressions. That intellectual layer and insisting consistency are paired with accessability and humour. In the physical dance component he works i.a. with individual articulations, as well with relations of dancers and danced dialogues. His own dance technique is informed by european, north american and asian principles.
